It wasn't real. It couldn't be.
He couldn't feel this way about another man.
He couldn't feel this way about one particular man.
He couldn't feel this way about his boss.
He was suddenly aware his boss, the man he dreamed about, was looking across the room at him. He tore his gaze away from the one that saw and knew everything, and stared unseeingly at his screen.
What was wrong with him?
He'd never looked at another man before.
He'd never thought about one in the way he kept thinking about his boss before.
He told himself again it wasn't real.
He told himself again he didn't feel this way about his boss.
He told himself again he wasn't in love.
He told himself again he wasn't in love with Leroy Jethro Gibbs.
But it didn't matter if it was real or not.
It didn't matter if he was in love with Gibbs or not.
Because even if it was real, even if he was in love, it'd never be returned.
Gibbs had someone.
Gibbs had a special someone.
Gibbs lived with someone.
He looked up again to see the 'someone' crossing the room towards Gibbs's desk.
He watched as Gibbs looked up.
He watched as Gibbs smiled.
He watched as Gibbs's face softened.
"Hey, Duck," he heard Gibbs say, his tone as gentle as his face. "You done?"
He watched Ducky smile. "Yes, my dear."
"Good. Let's go home."
He watched Gibbs put his arm around Ducky's shoulders and, adjusting his stride to match Ducky's, walk with him to the elevators.
That was real.
Gibbs and Ducky were real.
What he, Timothy McGee, felt or didn't feel wasn't real, couldn't be real.
Maybe if he told himself that often enough, he just might start believing it.
