“This is nice,” Donatello murmurs, leaning back against the railing and looking up at the sky. The city lights are too bright to see any stars even from way up here on the rooftop of one of the tallest buildings near the lair, but he can still imagine how they shine.
“Really?” Mikey asks, looking up from his pizza. A string of cheese dangles from the turtle’s mouth, and he sucks it up without hesitation. “You’re not upset ‘cause I forgot to grab your telescope?”
“It was my fault, too,” Donatello shares. They had been in such a rush to escape without Splinter’s notice and while Raphael and Leonardo were still butting heads that they had both to failed to grab the ‘scope. What Donnie doesn’t say is that he’d been tempted to leave it and all his tech behind anyway. It’s nice just to get to spend this time with his beloved, little brother away from all the others, the city’s noise and rush, and their lives as crime fighters in a city most known for its crime rate.
He leans forward and catches the end of Mikey’s pizza in his mouth. He expects Michelangelo to yell at him, but he doesn’t. Instead he turns his slice and holds it while Donnie nibbles. He kisses Mikey’s fingers as he reaches for the crust.
“Dude,” Mikey says, his words penetrated with a giggle, “pizza was never this good!” He reaches for another slice, but Donnie beats him to it and holds this slice for Mikey to eat. He watches his brother as he takes his time nibbling the pizza and savoring each bite. Pizza was never this good nor was a cheap date. They need more nights like this, he decides and vows to leave his tech behind more often.
