Winter had hit New York with a vengeance during the night. Ryo woke to ice on the windows, and the temperature in his apartment too cold for comfort. Outside, the wind moaned, rattling the panes of glass in their frames as if trying to find a way in.

Ryo shivered, reaching for his robe, putting it on before sliding out from his cosy spot under the covers. He would have preferred to stay there, but he was on first shift at work, and it wouldn’t be fair to take the day off just because it was cold. As unpleasant as it was, it would only get worse; spring was a long way off. Shoving his feet into slippers, he crossed the bedroom to turn the heating up a few degrees.

In the bed, all that was visible of Dee was a lump under the covers and a tuft of hair against the pillow. Ryo left his partner there; Dee might as well stay snug until it was his turn for the bathroom. Gathering his clothes, Ryo left the bedroom, intent on warming up under the shower.

At least the hot water was plentiful; Ryo was soon showered, shaved, and ready for another busy day. Dressed for the weather, foregoing his suit in favour of warm slacks and a sweater over a long-sleeved t-shirt, he went back to the bedroom, where the Dee was still buried under the covers.

Ryo crawled onto the bed and prodded his lover. “You awake? Bathroom’s free.”

“Lucky bathroom,” Dee’s voice emerged, muffled by the thick comforter

Laughing, Ryo tugged at the covers, but Dee had a firm grip on them and they didn’t move. “Time to get up. You’ll be late for work if you don’t hurry.”

“I’m not goin’.”

“Why? Are you sick?” Ryo frowned, concerned; Dee had seemed fine the night before.

“No.” An eye peeped over the comforter. “Too cold out, I’m gonna stay here an’ hibernate until spring.” Dee vanished beneath the covers again.

Caught between amusement and exasperation, Ryo sat there for a few minutes, not sure how to handle this. He’d been reluctant to get up himself, but he’d done it anyway. Dee was behaving more like Bikky when he wanted to skip school.

“I guess that means you don’t need to eat,” he said finally. “Pity, I bought your favorite oak smoked bacon for breakfast. Oh well, just means all the more for Bikky and I.” Ryo climbed off the bed.

Dee squirmed his way free. “Okay, okay, I’m gettin’ up! No way are you feedin’ my bacon to the brat,” he exclaimed indignantly.

“Are you sure? I wouldn’t want to disturb you if you’re set on hibernating.”

Dee scowled. “You play dirty.”

“I have no idea what you mean. Don’t take too long in the shower, breakfast will be ready soon.”

Muttering to himself, Dee headed for the bathroom.

“Round one to me.” Ryo smiled; he just hoped Dee wasn’t going to be like that every day.

The End
